An eschatological text discovered in a medieval fragment of the Guenizah of Cairo

Our collections are continuously being used for research and studies by researchers from all over the world and are being regularly featured in various publications. This is for example the case with an article titled Un testo escatologico ebraico medievale in un frammento della genizah del Cairo in Materia giudaica. Rivista dell'Associazione italiana per lo studio del giudaismo (2021). Vol. 26/2.

You can of course find this article in our collections and consult it in our reading room under the reference number A22855. To give you an idea of its content, here is a short summary:

This document is a transcription in Latin and Italian of manuscript IV B 21 of the Cairo Guenizah (Collection of the Consistoire de Paris archived in the library of the Alliance israélite universelle)

This fragment belongs to an eschatological passage that has great similarities with other texts of Jewish eschatological writings during the Middle Ages. The article invokes a comparison between these different texts and emphasises the reoccurring aspects of this type of literature, especially during the period of the Crusades.

Eschatology is the depiction of the end of time, and in Judaism such visions were especially common during difficult historical periods, such as the destruction of the First Temple or the Crusades in Europe.
