II. Places and spaces

What are the places that came across the historical trajectory of the Uzan family? Regarding the geographical context, the family found themselves at that time in the French protectorate of Tunisia. The Uzans, like most of the Livornese Jews, were based around the coastal cities. First in Tunis, but also Sousse and the small seaside cities on the Golf of Tunis, such as Carthage, Le Kram and La Marsa, frequented specially during summer, when the good Tunisian bourgeoisie moved from the capital to the villas of the periphery. The photographic collection presents the urban and Tunisian roots of the Uzansconsistent with the social profile of the wealthy bourgeoisie, established in the European districts and in the white beaches of Cap Carthage. This was a world topographically close to that of their Tunisian co-religionists, and yet profoundly distant from a cultural, economic and social point of view.

The family members, feeling comfortable in these different spaces, moved around casually by bike, car (a symbol of a privileged status), by seaplane, which allowed them to travel often, quickly and far, crossing Tunisia and the Mediterranean. The images taken during many vacations, testify that their Tunisian roots always went hand in hand with the maintenance of an indestructible emotional bond with the European world, and with Italy in particular.
